Mother and Daughter Childminding Duo Celebrate Double Success
A mother and daughter who run a successful childminding business are both celebrating after completing their NVQ’s.
Karen Kemp began childminding 14 years ago with her husband after having her own three children. Over the years the role has more than exceeded her expectations, “I love working from my home and the fact that I’m my own boss. As a childminder you can build up such a close relationship with the children that you care for and over the years we have cared for many children in the same family so we get to watch them grow. ”
Malandra decided to join her mum in December 2006 and Malandra brought to the business her own set of skills and strengths. “I love working with the babies and the management side of things. I get great job satisfaction from encouraging the children to develop. Childminders can have a huge influence on the children that they care for so I encouage them to have respect for each other and celebrate their diversity.”
Karen was keen to develop her knowledge and skills and after completing her Level 3 NVQ at her local college she decided that she wanted to study further. Karen wanted to complete a NVQ Level 4 in CCLD however she was struggling to fit in the demands of working long hours as a childminder and attending college on a regular basis. “I chose to study with Bev Amison Consultancy because of the accessibility aspect of the company. Bev Amison Consultancy were flexible, they came out to see me and did lots of observation to assess my competency. It was my qualification and my assessor and I worked together to decide when would be the best time for my visits to take place. I also liked the fact that I could always contact my assessor if I needed to, I used to email her work and get a response back straight away with feedback and actions.”
