Working Together to Safeguard Children

Working Together to Safeguard Children March 2010

Is your settings' safeguarding children policy up to date inline with the above mentioned document?

In-depth descriptors of the abuse types are included in the document on pages 38 &39 which could be included in your policy to ensure that all staff and parents are clear of what constitutes abuse before then explaining your procedure for dealing with suspected abuse.

Are all of your staff members aware of the procedure and who they should approach if they have a concern about a child?  This is vital!
  • Consider having a 'policy of the month' procedure to refresh everyone’s knowledge of the safeguarding and other policies;
  • Does your policy include the procedure and obligation that staff have to 'whistle blow' if they see inappropriate behaviour towards children from a colleague or other professional in the setting?
  • Provide a copy of the policy to all staff as part of the induction process for all new employees;
  • Ensure that staff members have access to policies in the setting, which they can refresh their knowledge from.
  • Are the designated person for safeguarding children and the second designated person detailed in your policy?

Remember to stay up to date with your Local Safeguarding Children Board (LCSB) as they will have the most up to date information for your area including contact names and numbers for making referrals.
