What is a Risk-benefit assessment?

There is no legal requirement to eliminate or minimise risk, even where children are concerned.’

Managing Risk in Play Provision: implementation guide

When it comes to children’s play we are constantly assessing what they are doing, how likely they are to injure themselves and what we can do to prevent them from coming to harm. We are mostly focused on the negative outcomes that could be rather than the benefits that a child or young person could be missing out on when we intervene and in most cases stop the play in its tracks.

We are not suggesting that risk to children during their play should be ignored but that it should be looked at as a full picture that clearly weighs up the pros and cons to risky play – what are the risks and what are the benefits.

‘Riskbenefit assessment is a suitable and sufficient risk assessment that brings together an analysis of both risk and benefits’
