The CACHE Level 3 Award in Induction to Playwork, Certificate in Playwork and Diploma in playwork, QCF (Qualifications Credit Framework) qualifications recognise the 16 play types as devised in ‘A playworker’s Taxonomy of Play Types’ by Bob Hughes.

What is Fantasy Play?

Fantasy play is about children having the opportunity and taking this opportunity to rearrange the world in their own way using their playful minds; in most cases of fantasy play the play is something that is unlikely to happen in reality.
Fantasy play can be children playing and re-enacting scenes from star wars or other sci-fi or superhero films, books and television. It could also be other play e.g. flying a UFO or pretence of doing something ‘super’.

What resources can we provide to encourage Fantasy Play?

Lengths of materials
Masks
TV/films
Books
Large boxes
A range of hats
Dressing up costumes
Long tubes
Mirrors
Face paints

Fantasy play engages children in creativity including thinking in a creative way and implementing this through their play. Fantasy Play also encourages and builds imagination, expression and spontaneity.
